Our Story

The Tolen Foundation was born from a place of profound personal loss, rooted in the difficult journey of healing and the desire to protect others. Founder Roman Xavier Rodriguez Robert established the organization after losing his partner, Josh, to a devastating battle with heroin addiction.

Alongside the unimaginable emotional heartbreak, Josh’s struggle brought a silent, often overlooked consequence: severe financial devastation. For Roman, the path to rebuilding his life and restoring his financial stability took years of painstaking effort, education, and resilience.

A SHared REality

As Roman sought the most effective methods for his own recovery, he discovered he was far from alone. He listened to the quiet struggles of grandparents, parents, and children who had faced similar—and sometimes far worse—realities due to a loved one’s addiction. The realization that so many families were navigating this crushing dual burden of grief and financial ruin became the defining catalyst for The Tolen Foundation. Today, we stand as an advocacy organization dedicated to providing financial literacy, guidance, and hope to those navigating the collateral damage of addiction.

The Meaning Behind Our Identity

Our identity is deeply personal, designed to honor the past while lighting a path forward.

  • The Name: “Tolen” was the alias Josh used during the darkest, most difficult moments of his addiction. By bringing this name into the light, the foundation reclaims it as a beacon of transformation—acknowledging the depths of the struggle while fighting for a brighter future.

  • The Rose: Our logo serves as a tribute to enduring love. It represents the very first gift Roman gave to Josh when they met—a single rose that was miraculously found preserved in Josh’s car years later, following his passing. It is a constant reminder that even in the wake of profound tragedy, love, beauty, and resilience remain.

In Loving Memory

My most sincere hope is that through this tragedy, others are able to find hope that leads to a better and more fulfilling lives.
