**A Starter Guide to Recovery & Protection**

Introduction: Secure Your Oxygen Mask First

If you are reading this, you are likely in the middle of a crisis. Addiction is
not just a health issue; it is a financial wrecking ball. For example, you may have
discovered drained savings, maxed-out credit cards, or loans taken out in your name.
This leaves you feeling betrayed, panicked, and unsure of your future.

This guide is your triage kit. It is not about punishing your loved one; it is about
protecting your ability to survive so that you _can_ be a resource for their recovery—
not their addiction.

### Phase 1: Immediate Triage (Stop the Bleeding)

Before you can fix the past, you must secure the present. Take these steps immediately.

#### 1. The “New Bank” Rule

If you have joint accounts, money is vulnerable. Do not just open a new account
at the same bank. Tellers may know your spouse/child and be manipulated into allowing
access, or “Right of Offset” clauses might allow the bank to seize your new funds
to cover their overdrafts.

 * **Action:** Open a new checking and savings account at a completely **different**
   financial institution.
 * **Action:** Redirect your direct deposit (paycheck) immediately to this new account.

#### 2. The Credit Freeze (The Iron Dome)

This is the single most effective tool to stop new debt from being accumulated in
your name.

 * **Action:** Contact all three major bureaus immediately to freeze your credit.
This is free and does not hurt your score.
    - **Equifax:** [equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services](https://www.equifax.com)
    - **Experian:** [experian.com/freeze](https://www.experian.com)
    - **TransUnion:** [transunion.com/credit-freeze](https://www.transunion.com)
 * **Tip:** Do not lose the PIN they give you. You will need it to unfreeze credit
if _you_ need to apply for something.

#### 3. Digital Lock down

Addiction often leads to a breach of digital privacy.

**Action:** Check “Recovery Email” and “Recovery Phone Number” settings. Ensure
the verification codes aren’t being sent to your loved one’s phone.

**Action:** Change passwords on all email and banking apps. Use a passphrase (e.
g., “Blue-Coffee-Table-99!”) rather than a word.

### Phase 2: The Financial Boundary Blueprint

Boundaries are the distance at which you can love someone and treat them with respect,
while simultaneously not allowing them to hurt you.

#### The Golden Rule: Goods and Services, Never Cash

Addiction thrives on liquidity. Cash disappears; bills remain.

 * **Policy:** “I will not give you cash. If you are hungry, I will buy you a sandwich.
If you need gas, I will pump it. If the electric bill is due, I will pay the
   utility company directly.”

#### Scripts for Saying “No”

When the crisis hits (“I’m going to jail,” “The dealer is coming”), the pressure
to pay is immense.

 * **The Script:** _“I love you too much to pay for something that might kill you.
I cannot give you money, but I can drive you to a meeting/rehab.”_
 * **The Script:** _“My financial health is required for this family’s survival.
I am not discussing money with you until you have 90 days of sobriety.”_

#### The “Bail” Boundary

Many families bankrupt themselves paying bail, only for the loved one to use again
immediately.

 * **Hard Truth:** Sometimes, a jail cell is the safest place for an addict to be.
It is a controlled environment where they cannot access their substance of choice.
Think carefully before liquidating assets to remove them from that safety.

### Phase 3: Repairing the Damage

#### Addressing Fraudulent Debt

This is the hardest pill to swallow. If your loved one opened cards in your name,
it is identity theft.

 * **The Dilemma:** Creditors generally will not forgive the debt unless you file
a police report alleging identity theft.
 * **The Choice:** You have two options:
    1. **Absorb the Debt:** You pay it off. (Recommended only if the amount is small
and you can afford it without ruining your future).
    2. **Report the Crime:** You file a police report. This is often necessary to clear
your credit history, especially for large amounts (mortgages, massive card debt).
This is not “mean”; it is holding an adult accountable for a crime.

#### Rebuilding Your Score

 1. **Pull your reports:** Go to [AnnualCreditReport.com](https://www.annualcreditreport.com)(
the only federally authorized free source).
 2. **Dispute Errors:** If there are inquiries you didn’t make, dispute them in writing
    with the bureaus.
 3. **Secured Cards:** If your score is tanked, open a “Secured Credit Card” (backed
by a cash deposit) at your new bank to begin rebuilding positive payment history.

### A Note on Guilt

You will feel guilty for hiding your purse. You will feel guilty for changing the
Netflix password. You will feel guilty for saying no.

**Guilt is a liar.** By protecting your finances, you are ensuring that there is
a home, food, and stability available when your loved one is finally ready to choose
recovery. You are not cutting them off; you are preserving the lifeboat.
